Hwange - A Zimbabwean man, who appeared before a magistrate in Hwange, reportedly claimed that his victim, a mentally ill woman, forced him to have sex with her.

According to News Day, Muhongo Nyoni, 39, made the claims when he appeared before regional Magistrate Dambudzo Malunga before he was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in jail.

Nyoni said that the woman threatened to open a rape charge against him if he did not have sex with her.

Nyoni initially told the court that the 27-year-old mentally challenged woman had agreed to have sex with him, but he later changed his plea, saying the woman had forced him to have sex with her.

The court was told that on January 3, the unidentified mentally challenged woman was passing by Nyoni’s home when he offered to accompany her, but she refused.

Nyoni, however, followed the woman from a distance and caught up with her at a quiet place where he proposed love, but she also refused his advances.

He allegedly demanded sex from her, but she still refused, before she attempted to escape.

Nyoni gave chase and tripped her to the ground before raping her.

This came a few months after a young woman reportedly raped her employer's 14-year-old son.

New Zimbabwe revealed that Lindiwe Kahili, 19, was taken for mental check-ups after she regularly kept on changing her plea during trial.

Kahili had previously pleaded guilty to the charge of indecent assault, but she later changed her plea, saying that the teenage boy had actually raped her.
