Harare - Zimbabwe's Zanu-PF party national commissar has issued a strong warning against those with ambitions to succeed President Robert Mugabe, telling them that discussing the issue before the end of his term was like committing "treason", reports the state-owned Herald.

Saviour Kasukuwere said that anyone who discussed the issue prematurely risked being expelled from the ruling party.

This came as the battle to succeed Mugabe, 92,  intensified within Zanu-PF.

Vice Presidents Emmerson Mnangagwa, Phelekezela Mphoko and First Lady Grace Mugabe were among the possible names in the looming battle to take over from Mugabe.

Grace  Mugabeand Mphoko were reportedly aligned to a group of young Turks known as Generation 40(G40), while Mnangagwa was believed to be backed by security top brass and war veterans.

"President Mugabe's term of office runs until 2018 and any talks or discussion questioning his term of office borders on treason," Kasukuwere was quoted as saying.
