Harare - The dates when Zimbabwe’s civil servants will get their July salaries will be released by Friday, Labour Minister Prisca Mupfumira has said.

Pressure was mounting for the government to pay its workers, NewsDay reported on Wednesday.

Mupfumira admitted that payment of the July salaries would be delayed, but that the government would pay them earlier than last month. The minister had met government workers’ representatives to counter speculation about pay dates that was circulating on social media.

According to News24, the Zimbabwean government had once again failed to pay its employees on time.

President Robert Mugabe's government had reportedly delayed the payment of soldiers' salaries. The military was usually first in line to get paid, due to its role in protecting 92-year’s regime.

The cash-strapped government reportedly spent more than 80% of its revenue on wages. Recently it had to stagger pay dates as it scraped the bottom of its coffers.

In recent weeks, widespread sporadic protests against the government have erupted in the country.

The country was brought to a standstill after teachers, doctors, and nurses went on a national strike over their unpaid June salaries two weeks ago.
