Harare – Zimbabwe's ageing President Robert Mugabe and his arch-rival Morgan Tsvangirai are expected to go up against each other in Matabeleland West this Friday, as they address separate rallies to drum up support for the crunch 2018 elections, says a report.

According to NewsDay, Mugabe is expected to address a Zanu-PF youth rally in Lupane, while his long-time rival Tsvangirai would be updating the party’s Bulawayo provincial structures on the ongoing coalition talks with other opposition parties.

The two separate rallies had been cancelled last week after both Mugabe and Tsvangirai flew out of the country for medical check-ups, in Singapore and South Africa respectively.

The rallies were reconfirmed by both Zanu-PF and MDC-T officials this week, said the report.

Last month, reports indicated that Mugabe was on a countrywide campaign to woo the country’s youth ahead of crunch 2018 elections.

A series of rallies was expected to take place between June and October.

They’re going to be held in all of the country’s 10 provinces.

The first of Mugabe’s rallies was held at a soccer stadium in Marondera, a small town east of Harare.

Previous ballots have been marred by allegations of the existence of ghost voters, with names listed of people who were long dead, were under age, or who never even existed.

Opposition parties are trying to forge an electoral alliance, in a bid to oust Mugabe.

But Mugabe has scoffed at the planned alliance, saying it would make victory easier for his ruling party as it could focus on one common rival, rather than separate opponents.

Zanu-PF is widely seen as divided over Mugabe's successor, with vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa seen as one of the favoured replacements, along with Mugabe's wife Grace.
