Bulawayo – A Zimbabwean man has been caught with a consignment of hand grenades, which he allegedly intended to use during the recent stay-away demonstrations, state-owned newspapers have reported.
According to the Herald newspaper, police arrested Henry Nyandoro at a house in Famona suburb following a tip-off.
Confirming the arrest, national police spokesperson Charity Charamba urged Zimbabweans to avoid violence.
The southern African country came to a standstill on Wednesday after thousands of Zimbabweans across the country downed tools.
The stay-away calls were reportedly made by a social media group named #ThisFlag, demanding that the government acted on the country's ongoing economic collapse.
Zimbabwe has in the last months been hit shortages of cash, import controls and the failure of the government to pay salaries on time.
A News24 report on Wednesday indicated that young people had turned the country's second largest city, Bulawayo, upside down, as they burnt tyres in the middle of the roads and threw stones at the police.
