Cape Town – Zimbabwean opposition party, Zimbabwe People First (ZPF), has threatened to demonstrate at the University of Fort Hare’s centenary celebration, should President Robert Mugabe attend.

The celebration was slated for May 25, with Mugabe among the top dignitaries expected to attend.

However, on Tuesday, the ZPF's interim co-ordinator in South Africa, Builder Lawrence Mavhaire, urged the university to withdraw the invitation to Mugabe.

In a letter addressed to Vice Chancellor Mvuyo Tom, Mavahire said Mugabe had embarrassed the institution's former graduates through his tainted record of human rights abuses.

Mavhaire said Mugabe did not fit into the calibre of notable alumni produced by the university, such as Herbert Chitepo, Oliver Tambo, Julius Nyerere, Robert Sobukwe, Kenneth Kaunda, Chris Hani and Nelson Mandela.

The party added that Zimbabweans had nothing to celebrate due to Mugabe’s heavy handedness.

Meanwhile, according to New Age, the Movement for Democratic Change, led by Morgan Tsvangirai, said that they found it very strange "for an old man like Robert Mugabe" to come all the way to celebrate a neighbouring country’s institution’s success when the education sector in his own country was in tatters.

MDC-T's Giyani Dube, was quoted as saying that they objected to Mugabe’s invitation, due to his continued harassment of human rights defenders, among other issues.
