A five-month-old baby and seven other people died in a taxi accident between Senekal and Steynsrus in the Free State while three others died in other parts of the country.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said yesterday’s Free State crash involved two taxis.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said a car was also involved in the accident.

Five people were critically injured and 17 sustained injuries ranging from minor cuts to suspected neck and back injuries.

In KwaZulu-Natal, a man in his twenties died after trying to cross the N2 north near Ballito.

“Exact detail of the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain a subject for police investigation and comment,” Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

He said when paramedics arrived at the scene last night they found the man lying in the road unresponsive.

“After their examination they found that the man had tragically died on impact due to the extensive injuries that he sustained.”

Botha said traffic in the area was severely affected for several hours while police investigations were taking place.

In Potchefstroom, two people died and two were critically injured in an accident on Nelson Mandela Drive in Potchefstroom.

Steinmann said paramedics responded to the accident just before 3am today.

“Upon their arrival on scene they found that there were four motor vehicles involved and that two of the vehicles burst into flames.”

Steinmann said two people were critically injured and various others sustained multiple injuries.

“After all the injured were treated and stabilised on scene, they were transported to nearby medical facilities for the urgent medical care that they required.”
