Eleven people, including three children, died when two vehicles collided on the N1 near the Mookgopong off-ramp in Limpopo, traffic police said today.

“The accident happened last night when a Mazda and a VW collided just after the [Mookgopong or Naboomspruit] off-ramp. Members of the South African Police Service are investigating the accident,” said spokesperson Kagiso Mootane.

The three children who died were aged between four and six, Mootane said.

Meanwhile, one man was injured when a vehicle crashed through a shopping centre in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

According to ER24, paramedics sent to the scene found that a car crashed into a store at a Cato Ridge shopping centre, damaging its wall and windows.

A spokesperson from the emergency medical care company said that a man in his fifties sustained moderate injuries when a vehicle hit him inside a shopping centre.

The injured man was taken to Edendale Hospital for further medical treatment. The driver was unharmed.

The cause of the accident was being investigated by police.
