12 injured in truck collision

2011-02-11 11:00

Twelve people were injured, four critically, when an articulated truck carrying a cargo of live chickens overturned on the R30 between Orkney and Bothaville in the North West Province today, paramedics said.

The truck struck a bakkie carrying five occupants and a car with five people before overturning and skidding to a halt on its side, said Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

“Those on the back of the bakkie were thrown out on impact and were found lying near the crumpled remains of the bakkie,” said Wicks.

“One man was entrapped in the wreckage of the car, which had five occupants, and had to be extricated by medics and fire-fighters using the jaws of life and other hydraulic rescue equipment.”

The injured were treated and stabilised at the scene before they were taken to various hospitals and clinics in the area.

Wicks said the cause of the accident remains unclear and would be investigated by police.

The road was closed while emergency service personnel cleared the road.
