150 New Year’s emergency calls in Joburg

2015-01-01 09:18

Johannesburg emergency services received 150 emergency phone calls during the night, mostly for assaults.

Around 70% of the calls were from people reporting cases of assault, spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said.

The rest were for motor vehicle and fireworks-related accidents.

“In Soweto we had an incident in Meadowlands when a lady in her 40s was injured when fireworks exploded in her face while she was trying to ignite it.”

A Soweto man was injured when fireworks exploded in his hand. Both patients were taken to hospital.

In Hillbrow seven cases of assault were reported, and a man jumped from the 12th floor of a building.

“He’s alive. We’re not sure what the reason was that he jumped.”

Meanwhile, twelve shacks were razed when a fire broke out in Zandspruit today, Mulaudzi said.

The fire broke out around 6am, but had since been extinguished.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was being investigated.

Disaster management officials had been sent to the area to help. People in informal settlements were urged to exercise caution when using heating and lighting appliances.
