A film about the life of former president Nelson Mandela has been selected as the Royal Film Performance for 2013 in the UK.

“We are thrilled that Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom has been selected for the official Royal Film Performance this year, the first for a South African film,” producer Anant Singh said in a statement.

“This prestigious endorsement of the film recognises the impact [of] Madiba and his status as a global icon, particularly in the United Kingdom.”

The event is attended by Queen Elizabeth II or members of the royal family.

Last Thursday, it was announced the film, which premiered at the Toronto film festival last month, received the Audience Favourite Feature Award at the Aspen Filmfest in the US.

In the film, Mandela is portrayed by British actor Idris Elba, who is famous for his role in the television series The Wire, and films Thor, Prometheus and Pacific Rim.

The role of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is played by Naomie Harris, who starred as Eve Moneypenny in the recent James Bond film Skyfall.
