200 municipalities in arrears with Eskom

About 200 municipalities are in arrears with Eskom, with the bulk

of these in the Free State, the parastatal said today.

Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger said: “Two hundred

municipalities are overdue, 93 of these are within the Free State.”

He said that the parastatal was in daily discussions with the

erring municipalities: “The last thing we want to do is to proceed with


Yesterday, Eskom notified a number of Free State municipalities,

representing over 50 towns, of its intention to cut their power if they fail to

settle outstanding accounts.

Outstanding accounts must be paid before July 20.

Etzinger said: “We are hoping that the issue will be resolved by

that time.”
