SO what does 2010 hold? The year is already short-hand for football. And it would take a hard heart not to be excited by the prospect of hosting a World Cup.

The World Cup will be the biggest story of next year.

If government begins to click and work in the ways set out in Zuma’s plans, then we should see an impact on development.

The recession is turning and as the economy picks up and the benefits of the infrastructure boom reach their high point, the promised benefits should assist a rising tide of well-being.

We hope for an end to the histrionics that have come to define the tripartite alliance of the governing ANC and its communist and union allies.

Enough already of who’s left and right. All we’re interested in is what’s working and what’s not. Getting our children educated: a set of maths and literacy tests leaked earlier this month shows that South African children continue to lag ­behind the rest of the world.

Our president needs to stamp his authority on his administration and give the nation leadership and focus.

Too often this year we have felt adrift as he did not speak out on the issues of the day or know how to tame his wayward allies.

As you take off your working clothes and put up your feet for a rest, we hope you will be safe and enjoy the respite from a tough year.

If you are driving, don’t drink. And if you’re drinking, don’t drive. Combined with roadworks around the country, our road manners (or lack of them) threaten to turn this holiday season into a killer season.

May 2010 be all that you dream it will be.
