2010: the year of cupcakes, diets and Justin Bieber

2010-12-24 12:59

Google searches for major news and sporting events remain popular, but it is entertainment and new technologies that capture the spirit of 2010, according to the annual Google Zeitgeist report.

The Zeitgeist (“spirit of the times”) team uses the “fastest rising queries” of the year as an indication of what captured web users’ imagination in 2010: it finds the most popular searches conducted in 2010 and ranks them based on the extent to which their popularity increased compared with last year.

The “fastest rising people” searches of the year include singers Justin Bieber and Katy Perry, actress and singer Selena Gomez, socialite Kim Kardashian, rapper Eminem and pop queen Lady Gaga.

In the food and drinks category, “cupcakes” is the culinary flavour of the year – reaching the number three spot for most searches.

The “fastest rising health queries” show people’s obsession with weight loss solutions. The controversial HCG diet is the most searched query and searching “McDonalds nutrition” ranks fourth.

Fastest declining searches include “swine flu”, “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Michael Jackson”.
