#Trending rounds up the best and worst in pop culture this year

TV drama of the year: Generations

Generations fires actors

TV reporter Asanda Magaqa was escorted off ANN7 premises, there was a stampede at the Skeem Saam auditions, DA political ad campaign Ayisafani was banned by the SABC and a nation was transfixed by the Oscar Pistorius trial, but it was the sacking of the Generations cast that was the TV drama of the year.

SA movie of the year: Love The One You Love

Love the one you love

It was a miserable year at the box office for SA movies. Afrikaans romcoms dominated and state film funds continued to push slightly vacuous action movies.

But all is not lost. We’re seeing the emergence of new indie film makers and our documentaries are starting to make waves.

What we loved most was the debut from Jenna Bass, a Cape Town director who shot and edited Love The One You Love. It’s a crazily delightful love story about a dog handler and a phone sex operator existing in the bubble that is Cape Town. – Charl Blignaut

TV show of the year: Our Perfect Wedding

Our Perfect Wedding

Mzansi Magic rocked with its reality show, Our Perfect Wedding. It trended on social media with the entire season of weird and outrageous SA wedding partnerships – from Ausi Monki’s Ben 10 wedding to interracial marriages and awkward kisses.

And who can forget Sizwe (above) who told his bride Sandile: “Tonight we are eating the butternut.” – Siyabonga Sithole
