Police arrested 227 people in a police operation in different areas of Gauteng last night.

“The operation was conducted last night in Moroka, Lenasia, Lenasia South, Naledi, Jabulani and Dobsonville clusters,” Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

The operation took place between 9pm and 4am.

The 227 arrests included attempted rape, dealing in liquor, dealing in dagga, possession of unlicensed firearms, stolen vehicles, stolen property and driving under the influence of alcohol, he said.

Two shebeens were closed down and no one was injured.

Makhubela said those arrested were expected to appear in the Vereeniging, Lenasia, Protea and Roodepoort magistrates courts on Monday.
