3-way duel of the sedans: Elantra takes flight

2011-09-09 14:18

You know a new car is going to be a success when everyone is already talking about it just by seeing the TV commercial. Hyundai has taken the ugly duckling Elantra model and turned it into one hot bird.

Since its first-generation launch in 1990 up to the previous model launch in 2006, the Elantra models have been rather unappealing.

What’s new:
There is a 1.6 GLS manual model as well as the 1.8-litre manual and automatic GLS models. The latter features a six-speed dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) gearbox with a flat-type torque converter and hydraulic engine mounts. All these features simply result in more power, efficiency and a refined drive.

Wind noise has been reduced significantly with foam material added to the frame pillars.

The low roofline contributes to making the wheel arches much lower. The sharp lines flow from the A-pillar along the hood and into the front bumper. The distinctive grille with swept-back headlamps makes its mark in Hyundai’s stable.

The interior layout is neat – the blue highlights and silver touches add to the finishing touch. The centre console features a windblown shape, adding to the dynamic, fresh look with high-gloss black and metallic colours.

We like:
» The sleek, sexy and aggressive looks; and
» Smooth drive and good handling.

We don’t like:

» The slightly whiny noise of the automatic gearbox.
