32 more Eastern Cape schools to be closed

2013-05-07 08:54

Thirty-two more schools in the Eastern Cape have been gazetted to be closed.

The schools had been identified as “white elephants” as there was no learning or teaching taking place there, The Dispatch Online reported today.

There were already 310 schools gazetted for closure by the provincial authorities to allow school governing bodies and communities to register their concerns.

According to the newspaper, the education department has shut down education at 58 schools in the province in the past three years.

The department was using some of these buildings for extra classrooms, or were renovating them, department spokesman Loyiso Pulumani told the Dispatch Online.

“When a school closes, it’s just entity or the name of the school that is closed, not the actual infrastructure.”

Closed schools reportedly remained on the department’s asset register until they were moved to the provincial public works department for a decision on their future.
