4 Europeans linked to drug syndicate nabbed in Cape Town

2015-01-15 12:44

Four foreigners have been arrested in Cape Town for possession of drugs with an estimated street value of more than R1 million.

City of Cape Town Mayoral committee member JP Smith said the four were arrested on the N2 close to Somerset West on Wednesday.

Three men from Germany, aged 26, 31 and 51, as well as an Italian woman aged 31, were en route to Knysna in a camper van when they were pulled over by officers who had been tipped off that the vehicle was being used to transport drugs.

“It is alleged that the suspects are linked to a European syndicate operating in South Africa during the annual summer ‘rave’ season.”

He said officers found hashish, cocaine and two wine bottles filled with what they suspect is liquid MDMA (ecstasy), hidden in concealed compartments. The drugs had an estimated street value of R500 000.

“Information obtained from one of the suspects led officers to a premises in Muizenberg where they found more drugs, including more than two litres of liquid MDMA, cocaine and hashish with an estimated street value of R750 000.”

He said some of the drugs were cleverly concealed in specially designed drink bottles.

“It is alleged that the liquid MDMA is bottled in Amsterdam and then transported all over the world inside sealed champagne bottles.”
