Four people, including a three-month-old baby, were killed when their minibus taxi rolled about 100 metres down an embankment near Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal.

“Tragically four people died ... [in] the accident which paramedics from KZN EMS [emergency medical services], private ambulance services, the police and the Hibiscus coast fire department responded to at about noon,” emergency services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said today.

He said the vehicle rolled down the embankment after it veered off the steep winding Oribi Gorge road.

The three-month-old baby girl survived the crash but died upon arrival at hospital.

“She was rushed to Murchison hospital while being treated by paramedics. However, shortly after arriving at hospital the child’s condition deteriorated and she died,” he said.

Eleven other people were injured in the accident. One was critically injured, five sustained serious injuries and the other five had minor injuries.

They were treated on the scene before being transported to Murchison and Port Shepstone hospitals.

Earlier, five people were killed in an accident in Beaufort West. Ten others, including three children were critically injured in the incident, said Western Cape Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Daniels.

All 15 of them were travelling in a bakkie which was pulling a trailer.
