KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu has his first chance at a full term. Paddy Harper draws up a priority list of issues Mchunu will have to deal with.

» The impasse over the Durban dug-out port, which is central to the province’s economic development programme.

» The increasing number of service-delivery protests sparked by the housing backlog and the proliferation of shack communities in Durban and other towns in the province.

» The continuing problems in the provincial education department, including allegations of rampant corruption and selling of posts by teachers’ union Sadtu.

» The pockets of political violence at the KwaMashu hostel, Estcourt, and other areas.

» The breakdown in local government in KwaZulu-Natal municipalities because of the failure of power-sharing agreements between the ANC and the NFP.

Who is Senzo Mchunu?

ANC KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Mchunu (56) has been acting premier of KwaZulu-Natal since 2013 when he was appointed to replace Zweli Mkhize, who had been elected as ANC treasurer-general.

A former teacher from Hlabisa in Zululand, Mchunu was secretary of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal before being appointed as education MEC in 2009.

Mchunu is married to Thembeka, who is the mayor of uThungulu.
