Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion Jeffrey “Mongoose” Mathebula may hang up his gloves following two terrible jaw injuries.

Mathebula is under observation by his doctor, after which he must decide whether to continue boxing or call it quits.

“There is a 60% possibility that I will no longer compete as a boxer but it all depends on what my doctor says in two months’ time,” said the 34-year-old.

Limpopo-born Mathebula missed out on an opportunity to hold the IBF and World Boxing Organisation super bantamweight world titles when he faced off against Nonito Donaire in 2012.

His jaw was broken in two places in round three of the fight.

He underwent surgery to repair his jaw, in the hope of reclaiming the IBF belt last December against Kiko Martinez, but history repeated itself when he suffered yet another jaw injury.

The boxer told City Press he was considering pursuing the business of boxing promotion.

“The business is not doing well right now in South Africa, maybe it is high time for new players with fresh ideas to take boxing back to its glory days,” he said.

In a career spanning more than 14 years, Mathebula boasts 27 victories (14 by KO); five defeats (two by KO) and two draws.
