Seven people, including two alleged robbers, have been injured in a shoot-out at a shopping centre in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg.

“Three customers, two security guards and two suspects were injured during the shooting. All have been taken to hospital,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale.

Security guards were collecting cash inside the centre today when they were confronted by a group of armed men, she said.

“A shooting ensued between them, with some customers caught in the crossfire. An undisclosed mount of money was taken by some of the suspects.”

A tweet on an account for Bedford Centre said: “Bedford are investigating this horrific incident. We will release a statement as soon as we have more information.”

In another tweet it said: “No stores were involved. Shoot-out between SBV [cash-in-transit company] and robbers.”

A witness inside the centre, Renate Albrecht, told eNCA she had come out of a meeting when she heard “a stampede of people” coming.

“We turned around and we heard gunshots. My business partner and I basically ran. The shots were coming from inside the centre and it sounded like it was getting louder, like we were being followed,” she said.

They ran to her car and hid until they were brave enough to leave.

She said people were running everywhere.

A Sapa photographer on scene said the centre had been cordoned off.

Outside the centre’s parking lot, people were seen standing next to a bloody Volkswagen Jetta.

A Shell garage next to the centre was also cordoned off.
