A bagful of wishes for Father Christmas

“Please Santa’s helpers: I’ve never got a prezint in my life because my mom dus not have money for it, only stuff we ned. I have a baby brother to.”

These are the moving words of a young South African boy to the man he hopes will change his life for the better – Father Christmas.

More than 1 500 letters to Santa were received by the South African Post Office this year, and more are trickling in as the big day draws closer.

Some letters, like the one above, reveal the poverty and hopelessness many children will face come December 25.

Post Office spokesperson Lungile Lose says there are more like these.

“There was a woman two years ago who wrote asking for a bed.

She had two kids to look after and could no longer bear her uncomfortable mattress.

“One girl wrote about her father who died in a car accident.

The whole family missed him terribly and she asked Father Christmas to give him their regards,” he says.

“Another’s girl’s younger brother died as a baby and she also felt that Father Christmas would be able to pass a message on to him.”

But not all letters are tear-jerkers.

Some are downright funny.

Take this little girl’s request: “A kitten because the cat I have is old and all he does is sleep.

A stress ball because I don’t have a ball to play with.

Kris says all the balls in the house are his.”

And the requests don’t stop at ponies and PlayStation games, Lose explains.

“You may say the laptops they ask for this year are pretty outrageous, but the most expensive gift requested this year is from a girl who asks Father Christmas to bring her dad a silver bakkie – his best colour”.
