A boob for one is not a boob for all

The problem with being a conquered people is that even attention-seeking charlatans think they can prescribe what is sexy to you.

Take this Kola Boof character, for example. She says President Jacob Zuma fell for her after seeing her boobs while he was watching TV. The Presidency has correctly refused to give credence to Boof’s utterances by commenting on them.

One of my many problems with Boof is she has assumed there is a single standard of sexiness in the world ...and that is the Western form.

That is why she is so confident that her boobs have the same effect in rural Nkandla as they do in Western Europe and the US.

It might shock Boof to know that there are many South Africans (and other Africans) who see the naked breasts of women every day without attaching any sexual connotation to them.

In many places in rural KZN where the president hails from, breasts are such a non-event that only married women cover up.

In rural Venda it is common to find old women tilling the land topless.

If some among us have not universalised their fetishes, they would know that in some communities in South Africa, the hairier the woman, the sexier.

They would know too that many pitied – instead of envying – Dolly Parton for being cursed with the boobs her Maker gave her.

Having wallowed in her own hype about the magical effect of her breasts, Boof must have thought her wild tale would titillate.

It actually sickens.

On any other day and in many other countries, Boof’s wild fantasies would be dismissed using the colourful term to refer to the excrement of male cattle.

But that would be charitable.

Cattle excrement has a functional use.
