A man appears for toddler’s murder

A 19-year-old man appeared in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court today in connection with the murder of a three-year-old girl whose body was found in a forest earlier this month, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Mluleki Mbi said the case was postponed to next week Thursday for a formal bail application.

The man would remain in custody until then.

He was arrested on Tuesday at his house in Mdantsane, in the same area where the toddler, Zukhanye Jiba, disappeared from her home on April 2, while playing in the yard.

Her mother had been supervising and went inside the house for a moment. When she returned, her daughter was nowhere to be seen.

Jiba’s body was found on Tuesday by municipal workers in a forest outside East London.

The workers were cleaning up around bushes near a river in Buffalo Pass when they found her decomposing body.
