A night to say Mama mia!

2014-04-20 15:00

On a scale of 1 to 10, how annoyed are you with the epidemic of group selfies?

When the co-host of the MTV Africa Music Awards (Mama) nominations party, Nomuzi Mabena, called up celebs on stage?for a selfie – including her make-up artist, Ellen DeGeneres style – my heart sank. Methinks we are overdoing this now.

Let this not cloud an otherwise superb bash at The Sands in Sandton on Wednesday night. The vibe was electric and thumping with beats, the DJs were on point and the all-white setup welcoming, albeit crowded.

Pity the noisy guests would not allow MTV Base boss Alex Okosi and sponsor Absolut’s Shirley Mabiletja a chance to say their words of welcome.

It’s rude to lack such courtesy especially when the speeches are short –?but then again, that’s what you get when you take your party to a club.

The performers were also on fire. Burna Boy from Nigeria proved to be a hit with the revellers. Mafikizolo held their own, and boy can Theo Kgosinkwe move. It’s like he takes dance steroids.

Uhuru also did some damage with their monster hit Y-tjukutja.

Mabena flashed some leg in an ill-fitting and badly tailored black skirt. She was keen to twerk but was worried that her employers might sack her for inappropriate behaviour. Sizwe Dhlomo kept his cool in a thick winter jacket.

Out campaigning was comedian David Kau in an ANC T-shirt. He arrived late with his pals, who included actor Tony Kgoroge.

Nonhle Thema has put her baby-daddy drama aside and was on the red carpet recording interviews for her new TV show.

Some of the nominees in the personality of the year category include local comedian Trevor Noah, Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie, actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Oscar-winning Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o and Ivory Coast soccer star Yaya Touré.

We could possibly have the much sought-after Nyong’o on our shores soon. The song of the year award is a battleground between Nigerian and South African DJs.

They include Pluto (Remember You) by DJ Clock featuring Beatenberg, Xigubu by DJ Ganyani featuring FB, Spin My World Around by DJ Kent featuring The Arrows, Khona by Mafikizolo featuring Uhuru, Jika by Mi Casa and Nigerians Davido with Skelewu, Surulere by Dr Sid featuring Don Jazzy and P Square’s Personally.

If the energy of the nominees party is anything to go by, the finale at Durban’s International Convention Centre on June 7 will be an event that cannot be missed on the social calendar.
