A night with John Black

2012-11-03 13:51

You know you have aged when your excitement levels shoot up at the prospect of meeting a man you’ve only ever known as John Black.

Yep, I met Drake Hogestyn on Tuesday evening at the SABC3 Days of Our Lives cocktail party held at Emoyeni Estate in Parktown, Joburg. This is a man who, for many years, kept me glued to my 34cm TV back in the 1990s.

And at 59, Hogestyn is as charming as his character has always been – that salt and pepper hair, calling every woman “sweetheart” and “darling” and dishing out hugs. He was without question the man of the night.

I almost forgot about the other two cast members accompanying him, Galen Gering and Arianne Zucker. The latter plays Nicole Walker and Gering is Rafe Hernandez. In honesty, I only discovered this on the evening as I haven’t watched the long-running – 47 years and counting – daytime drama in years.

I heard Zucker was wearing a Gert-Johan Coetzee dress, which was a gift from the designer who seems to always be on top of things when it comes to promoting himself to international starlets.

The evening turned out to be a soapie affair with the arrival of Isidingo and Generations cast members. The Wild was represented by actor Tyrone Keogh.

Looking ravishing was Lorna Maseko who was also the MC. Very beautiful was Isidingo’s petite “evil aunt” Kgomotso Christopher.

For eats, there were chicken kebabs, lamb chops and quiche. We washed it down with cocktails and lots of Moët & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot.

For entertainment, we had Lindiwe Suttle who seems to have expanded beyond Cape Town gigs. She was doing really well until she started talking in her American accent. That was a major turn off.

I had a great time. John Black, thanks for the pic.
