A non-racist society in SA is a pipe dream

2012-03-31 11:49

I was really disgusted after reading the article “New racist spat at Virgin Active” (City Press, March 25).

It has become clear to me that white racists in South Africa still treat black people as inferior human beings.

I am a Pretoria resident and about two weeks ago, I received a pamphlet from the same gymnasium urging me to become a member . Not any time soon!

Following the reported cases of racism at Virgin Active, I have observed that it is the whites who practise racism in all its ugly forms.

Remember the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, where the blacks, as victims of the apartheid atrocities, begged the white perpetrators to ask for forgiveness?

The whites either did not tell all or failed to avail themselves because they knew that the whole “forgiveness” process of the commission was a futile exercise.

A while ago, a homeless black man in Pretoria was murdered by four young white men. Some of them were released from the Zonderwater prison by a racist parole committee before they could complete their sentences.

We pretend to be living in a “peaceful or Rainbow Nation”, yet we know this will never happen.

I wouldn’t be surprised if my letter is not published because even the South African media remains lily-white and is not yet transformed.

South Africa still has a long way to go before it can classify itself as a regarding the creation of a“non-racist society”.
