A piece of heaven in the middle of nowhere

2012-02-21 09:59

Situated in the middle of nowhere is a piece of heaven named Conrad Resort on Rangali Island.

The resort is spread across two little islands in the midst of the Maldives’ 2 000 islands and is a 30 minute flight from the capital, Male.

With news of political riots and its president recently resigning, I thought tensions would be running high. And indeed they are.

When I landed here I heard rumours of a protest of about 3 000 people – a lot for such a small place.

But the joy of the Maldives is that everything is on a separate island, so I won’t be caught in the firing line.

The flight to Rangali was calm as I got pulled in by the lush tranquility of the turquoise sea.

Settling in was hassle free as each traveller was assigned their own host as soon as they reached the dock.

The trip to my water villa whispered “welcome to relaxation”.

The secluded villa offered peace and quiet, with only the sound of tiny waves crashing against the pillars and a perfect view of the sunset.

It’s about half a kilometre off shore on the other end of the island – a bit of a walk to civilisation so I’d advise you to come stocked up.

The Maldives has a lot to offer and I’m headed under water to discover more.

The journey continues.
