A sweet R250 000 budget for SA teen’s birthday party

A lamb-spit braai, a leopard cub and a fashion show are just a few of the elements that will get viewers talking tomorrow afternoon when MTV Base airs South African teen Nina Rykaart’s 16th birthday party.

The former Miss Teen entrant’s birthday bash will go out to millions of viewers around the globe on MTV’s Sweet 16 World Class – a spin-off of the popular series, My Super Sweet 16.

Calls were made last year for local entrants to have their party filmed by the music channel – and Nina’s party made the cut.

Nina is the daughter of Interactive Security owner Nantes Rykaart. Interactive provided security to foreign residents during the 2009 xenophobic attacks and protection for delegates and celebrities during the 2010 World Cup.

Nina’s show-stopping party set Rykaart back a whopping R250 000. Still, he said: “I was very pleased at the way in which Nina managed the budget.”

Nina invited 115 friends and family to the bash. The theme of the birthday party at Misty Hills Resort in Muldersdrift on Johannesburg’s West Rand was Bedazzled Africa.

“I wanted to be able to bring the two different sides of my life together – my glamorous social life and my African heritage and culture,” said the teen.

Although Nina hired events planner Maia Jordaan from Creative Collective to assist her in the event she was at the forefront of all the decision-making.

“I did have to run my decisions past my dad for his approval,” said Nina. “He was usually okay with all the choices I made although we did disagree on the number of guests – I wanted more. In the end we compromised on numbers.”

Nina, who has moved to California in the US to live with her mother, got a stallion as a gift: “I really wanted a car but obviously I can’t get my licence until I am 18 so my dad – who knows how much I love horses – bought me a horse.”
