A twisted neck puts Vanessa out of the game

2011-04-13 14:34

After being injured in a challenge, Vanessa Haywood was forced to exit the show due to a a neck injury – the second player to leave the game due to medical reasons.

1.Why did you enter Survivor?
I entered Survivor because I knew it was going to be a huge challenge and I like pushing myself to the limit. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I had to give it a bash. There was, of course, the million rand as well. That was a nice motivational factor.

2.Were you expectations met?
Completely! And much more! It was way tougher, way more fun and far more of a challenge than I ever thought. It is the toughest thing I have ever done.

The difficulty of the challenges! I think Nico was trying to kill us. Ha ha. The challenges were extreme. And when you’re starving to death, have no energy and it’s 40 degrees with 90% humidity, it’s even worse.

3. How does strategy play a role in the game?

The very first strategy came into the game right in the beginning before we even knew we were going to be split. We decided that as the celebs or “original team” we were going to stick together and protect each other.

This didn’t exactly work as we decided to vote Felicity off at the first tribal council, which in retrospect was the silliest thing we did. Jacques then also left, and we lost a leader and the one person who brought a bit of strength to the tribe. It was horrible.

4. What surprised you most about the game?
The social game. I had no idea that people could be THAT vicious and conniving. It taught me a lot.

It was really difficult watching some episodes and hearing one or two people saying really nasty things about me and the actual scheming and conniving that takes place every day before a tribal council was exhausting. I’m not a naturally bitchy or conniving person so I found it extremely hard.

5. Looking back, would you change the way you played the game?

Yes! It would be great if you were given a “practise round” in playing Survivor because you just don’t know what to expect.

What is difficult is all the different types of personalities and the life experiences those people have had all been forced together on to a small island. I wouldn’t change too much, but it would be a bit easier knowing what to expect the second time around.

6. What are your plans now?

I’m doing exactly what I did before. Filming television and movies, going to auditions, doing voice work, MC-ing, training hard and racing a bit, and I also started a second marketing company called VH Marketing in Cape Town recently. I co-own another marketing business in Johannesburg.

7. What did you learn about yourself?
I learnt that I am not as tough as I thought I was. Ha ha. I didn’t go into the game thinking I’m She-Woman or anything like that, but I thought I would be a little tougher and I wasn’t.

I cried a lot, I was so hungry and grumpy, I was dead tired. Survivor is designed though to strip you down raw and expose you to the worst possible situations ever and it worked with me.

8. Would you play again?

Without a doubt! It was the most amazing, raw, humbling thing I have ever done. It tested my limits in such a massive way and I think I did well.
