AKA, Nyovest beef still sizzling

Two of South African hip-hop’s biggest stars – who between them took home seven Metro Awards in Durban last night – still can’t stand the sight of each other.

And the relationship between Refiloe “Cassper Nyovest” Phoolo and Kiernan “AKA” Forbes will probably only degenerate after Phoolo took home five awards and his nemesis bagged two at this year’s awards.

In December the pair publicly shook hands and claimed they had settled a long-running beef marked by insults, shoving and – on one occasion – a gun being drawn.

But City Press has learnt that on February 16, while posing together for a magazine cover shoot, the two completely ignored each other.

Two independent sources told City Press the pair, as well as Teargas star K.O., were to be photographed for the cover of Metro FM’s magazine MetroLive.

Both were present in the Randburg studios where the shoot was set up.

“Immediately, when AKA entered the room, there was tension. He walked in without greeting, while Cassper Nyovest and K.O. were already in the studio,” said one source.

“They did not even sit next to each other throughout the shoot,” the second source told City Press.

“AKA even refused to wear the stylist’s clothes. He had brought his own clothes. He wasn’t accommodating at all,” the second source added.

Both sources said AKA and Cassper Nyovest determinedly continued to ignore each other, even as they stood together for photographs.

“When they posed together for pictures there was no chemistry,” said one source.

One of the sources alleged AKA walked out while the final cover shots were being discussed – which meant the photographer couldn’t get a picture of the trio together.

“We had to Photoshop K.O. into the cover shot.

“I would never work with AKA again – he’s got a big attitude,” said one angry source.

City Press was shown a copy of one of the photographs from the shoot, and the men’s animosity is clear. But the source refused to let the picture be published.

AKA’s manager, Raphael Benza, told City Press: “At the beginning of the shoot, they were still warming up; that’s the reason they were not friendly to each other. They haven’t seen each other for a long time.”

Benza said his client was on time for the shoot and accused K.O. of being the one who showed up late.

“It was AKA and Cassper Nyovest’s decision to leave because K.O. showed up late and they were already exhausted by the time he arrived,” he added with irritation.

Benza then showed City Press a video on his phone that showed the rappers smiling at each other.

Cassper Nyovest’s manager, T-Lee Moiloa, added: “This is rubbish. People are trying to put us back. This is very upsetting.

“These young men are trying to make a living and someone is trying to destroy their music careers.”
