ANC, DA welcome new SAA CEO

2010-02-25 14:39

THE ANC and DA have welcomed the appointment of Siza Mzimela as

chief executive of SAA.

“In line with our objectives of creating a non-sexist and gender

sensitive society, we welcome Siza’s appointment as the first woman to head the

SAA,” the ANC said today.

The move would restore stability at the national carrier which had

been without a chief executive officer for a year.

The ANC was concerned about the leadership vacuum at senior

management level in some of South Africa’s state owned enterprises.

“Filling of senior management positions especially at CEO level is

crucial for any organisation’s stability.”

The DA called Mzimela’s appointment a “step in the right direction”

in solving the management crisis at the airline.

She had vast experience in aviation, and her appointment marked a

departure from the “cadre deployment” policy which had placed people with no

real experience.

“One needs only look at the current state that most enterprises are

in to see just what inexperienced leadership has achieved. For example, the

former CEO of SAA, Khaya Ngqula, who had no experience in aviation, led SAA to a

loss of R16.6 billion in six years and state bailouts totalling R16.8bn.”

The DA urged the minister of public enterprises to fill vacant

management posts at Eskom and Transnet, also with experts in their fields.
