ANC MP: Thuli is not our god

2014-04-27 15:00

One of the MPs representing the ANC on Parliament’s ad hoc committee that was formed to look into Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s report on security upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s private homestead in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, yesterday publicly criticised her and said the ANC was unfazed by her global recognition.

Committee member Buti Manamela said Madonsela was still “not our god”, regardless of being named by Time magazine as one of the world’s 100 most influential people.

Speaking during a march in support of Zuma in Durban, Manamela said a victory by the ANC at next week’s elections would be a vote of no confidence in the Public Protector.

“They can praise her good work, which is advancing the political agenda of the DA, she is still not our god. We still reserve our right to expose that she is acting more as a politician and that she has brought that office into disrepute,” said Manamela.

“We still reserve our right that we still have confidence in the ANC and pass a motion of no confidence on her on May 7. That, comrades, is what we are going to do,” he said.

At the same rally, Zuma backer and lawyer Comfort Ngidi said he would take legal action if Madonsela didn’t voluntarily review her findings on Zuma. Ngidi is part of a group of lawyers who want the courts to nullify the report and also order Madonsela to restart the investigation.

He said Madonsela had no authority to pass moral judgment on the president.
