ANC N Cape results expected

2012-06-08 09:03

The ANC in the Northern Cape is expected to announce its new leaders today.

Five of them were re-nominated for their positions yesterday, with chairperson John Block and provincial secretary Zamani Saul the only two whose posts were challenged.

Addressing the provincial elective conference, President Jacob Zuma said party members seemed to elect leaders first and then hold conferences later.

He said it was more important to first decide on programmes and take resolutions, and then elect leaders to take the programmes forward.

Zuma said the ANC should elect leaders on merit.

Block, who is standing for his third term as Northern Cape ANC leader, accepted his nomination, but is up against challenger Godfrey Oliphant, deputy minister of mineral resources.

Oliphant also accepted the nomination, despite some booing from delegates.

Northern Cape ANC deputy chairperson Kenny Mmoiemang was nominated alone for the position and he accepted.

Saul was challenged for his position by Archie Lucas, former Northern Cape MEC for education, who was properly nominated and accepted by sms.

Deputy secretary Alvin Botes and provincial treasurer Yolanda Botha were also nominated unopposed for their positions.

No nominations were received from the floor.

The election process for the two contested posts started on Thursday night. Nominations and election for additional posts on the party’s leadership structure will be held on Saturday.

The conference ends on Sunday.
