ANC NDC overturns Tlokwe councillors’ expulsion

2013-08-24 15:17

The ANC’s national disciplinary committee has overturned the expulsion of 14 councillors of the Tlokwe council.

The councillors were expelled by the party’s disciplinary committee in the North West following the reinstatement of DA mayor Annette Combrink last month.

In a statement, NDC chairperson Derek Hanekom said the councillors were found guilty on four counts of misconduct.

“The councillors were charged for participating in a motion of no confidence against the Executive Mayor of the Tlokwe Municipality (Maphetle Maphetle), an ANC candidate, in November last year which resulted in the mayor being replaced by a member of the opposition party (Combrink). They were also charged for failing to endorse the appointment of the municipal manager in June this year,” the statement reads.

They were found not guilty on two counts related to the motion of no confidence because they were charged seven months after the alleged misconduct, in contravention of the ANC constitution.

“With regard to the charges relating to the appointment of the municipal manager, the NDC, after evaluating the evidence, found that the version of the councillors was reasonably possibly true and that the PDC (provincial disciplinary committee) erred in its finding that the ANC proved the guilt of the councillors on a balance of probabilities. The councillors were also found not guilty on these charges,” Hanekom said.
