ANC Youth League congress this month

The ANC Youth League will hold its national congress in Johannesburg in the last week of November, the organisation said.

The 25th congress would be held from November 25 to 29 at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto Campus, spokesperson Bandile Masuku said in a statement.

“The national working task team (NTT) together with all ANCYL provincial secretaries are the steering committee in charge of all preparations.”

The NTT was put in place last year after the ANC disbanded the ANCYL's leadership. Masuku said all provinces were prepared for the event.

“The provinces that have already held their elective provincial congresses will be going for their provincial general councils to nominate their preferred national leaders and to finalise their provincial positions on the discussions,” he said.

In September, City Press reported that former youth league treasurer Pule Mabe could find himself out of the race for league president because of serious concerns in the ANC about handling yet another leader’s corruption fallout.

Mabe has run a well-organised and well-funded campaign.

His main rival, league national task team coordinator Magasela Mzobe, has in turn enjoyed the benefits of incumbency.

Mzobe has the support of ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, two league activists told City Press at the time.
