ANC against proposed KwaZulu-Natal tolls

The controversial tollgates planned for the N2 have the potential

to cause unrest in KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC in the province has warned.

“We are concerned that this matter has a potential of causing

unrest and that an urgent political intervention is needed in order to quell the

potentially explosive situation,” said ANC provincial secretary Sihle


He said the ANC was pleased that the provincial government would

soon meet Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele to discuss the matter.

“We are totally unhappy and against the introduction of these

tollgates,” said Zikalala.

“We believe that they will put an added economic burden [on] our

people,” he said.

The environmental affairs department’s recent decision to approve

the tolling of additional sections of the N2, had been met with resistance from

provincial government, the business sector and civic organisations.

The eThekwini Municipality was against the Isipingo tollgate, which

would be erected near the old Durban International Airport.

Zikalala said the ANC felt there was a need to speak to the SA

National Roads Agency Limited which determined where tollgates were


The KwaZulu-Natal government last month announced it would canvass

public views on the tollgates planned for the province.

It was doing so as it felt the planned tollgates would be a huge

burden on financially struggling motorists and would slow economic
