ANC allowed to intervene in ‘shoot the boer’ case

2011-02-25 11:01

The ANC was allowed to intervene in the hate speech case against its youth league president Julius Malema, Judge Colin Lamont ruled today.

“The ANC is joined to the proceedings as the first intervening party,” he told the Equality Court sitting at the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.

The Transvaal Agricultural Union was joined as the second intervening party.

The case related to Malema’s use of the term “shoot the boer” contained in a liberation song.

It centred on his use of the song on specific occasions – including in Polokwane, at the University of Johannesburg, in Rustenburg, in Mafikeng and in Harare, Zimbabwe, in March and April last year.

The ANC believes it is part of its heritage, while the union and AfriForum believe it can contribute to the murder of Afrikaners and farmers.

AfriForum launched a hate speech complaint against Malema at the Equality Court last year.
