ANC centenary ‘was no flop’

2012-01-10 14:10

The major logistical problems experienced during the ANC’s centenary celebrations in Bloemfontein did not make the event a flop.

This is according to ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu. He said artists, marshals, and invited guests experienced problems with accreditation, accommodation and food. Some people went back home as a result.

“It is very bad to invite someone, they come to your party and then you turn them away,” said Mthembu.

He said the ANC expected 100 000 people to attend the event, but many more pitched.

“All the venues that were used for the main event on Sunday – the Free State stadium, Loch Logan Waterfront and the cricket stadium – were full to capacity and some people who wanted to enter had to be turned away,” said Mthembu.

He said the situation underlined what President Jacob Zuma said in his centenary message – that the ANC needed to improve its organisational capacity.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. We underestimated how the big the event would be,” said Mthembu.
