The African National Congress (ANC) on Friday confirmed it had received documents for the appeals of its sanctioned youth league leaders.

The documents were received last night by party secretary-general Gwede Mantashe’s office and immediately handed over to Cyril Ramaphosa, chairperson of the ANC National Disciplinary Committee of Appeals, spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said.

The statement comes after the league leaders’ lawyer, Dali Mpofu, earlier today confirmed that they had filed appeals.

Mthembu said that from now, the appeal would be handled by the committee of appeals until it was finalised.

Any communication on the process would be decided by the committee of appeals at intervals determined by the committee.

League president Julius Malema was found guilty of bringing the ruling party into disrepute and sowing seeds of division.

League spokesman Floyd Shivambu, deputy president Ronald Lamola, treasurer-general Pule Mabe, secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa and deputy secretary-general Kenetswe Mosenogi were also found guilty of various charges and sanctioned by the ANC’s national disciplinary committee two weeks ago.

Malema was given a five-year suspension and Shivambu three years.

The ANC membership of the other four leaders was suspended for two years, suspended for three years.

They were given a deadline of last night to appeal against their suspensions.
