ANC considers fixed venue for national conferences

2013-05-20 16:25

The ANC is considering having a fixed venue for its national conferences, its secretary-general Gwede Mantashe has said.

“It is not working for us, this thing of rotating the conference and creating conference infrastructure every five years at a huge cost,” he told reporters in Joburg today.

“In the next NEC (national executive committee) meeting, we must take the decision that our conference will be in place X, and we can start working now for the conference in 2017.”

He said that in this way, the ANC would begin to deal with the costs and activities of its conferences “as early as possible”.

Mantashe was speaking after an NEC meeting at the weekend.

He said the NEC had received reports on the ANC’s Free State provincial conference and its KwaZulu-Natal provincial general council.

“The outcomes of the provincial conference were endorsed, as the NEC was convinced that the processes were thorough and reputable, and the new leadership of the Free State was welcomed, together with the chairperson of KZN province.”

Ace Magashule was re-elected Free State leader last week, during a re-run of its 2012 conference, which was found by the Constitutional Court to have been illegal.

The court declared the Free State provincial executive committee’s (PEC) decisions and resolutions unlawful and invalid, because the ANC had not addressed certain irregularities about the conference. As a result, the then PEC was dissolved.

KwaZulu-Natal education MEC Senzo Mchunu was elected provincial chairman in March.
