ANC decision on Vavi reckless – SACP

The SA Communist Party (SACP) has described the ANC’s national

working committee (NWC) decision to charge Cosatu boss Zwelinzima Vavi as

“reckless”, and said it was out of line with the ANC’s constitution and


This after the committee charged Vavi for his criticism of the ANC

and cabinet ministers.

SACP spokesperson Malesela Maleka today suggested that a

significant number of NWC members, including SACP leader, Blade Nzimande, were

absent from the meeting on Monday when the decision was made.

“We simply cannot believe that the ANC can take such a reckless

decision, which runs counter to the ANC’s own commitment to the alliance it


“If true, this reckless decision would have been pushed through

only after the NWC meeting was deliberately prolonged way past the meeting’s

scheduled conclusion, and therefore in the absence of a significant number of

NWC members,” said Maleka.

The NWC’s decision has also drawn flak from Cosatu, with some of

its affiliates arguing that it could sound the death knell for the

squabble-prone tripartite alliance. The ANC has yet to comment on the charges

against Vavi.
