The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has described as lies a media report that there was a plot to poison its chairperson Senzo Mchunu.

“Allegations that there is a plan to poison our chairperson have shocked us and we view them as nothing but fabricated lies that are directed at dividing our glorious movement,” provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said today.

“No one in the ANC leadership knows anything about the reported attempts ... and equally no one knows about the reported intelligence report that is said to have revealed that there was an attempt to poison food prepared for comrade Mchunu.”

The Sunday Times reported that the claims of a plot were threatening to split the African National Congress’s largest bloc, as the race to replace party leader President Jacob Zuma intensified.

According to an “intelligence report” reportedly in Mchunu’s possession, some of his Cabinet colleagues and ANC comrades were involved in the plot to poison him.

According to the paper several ANC and provincial government insiders close to Mchunu had seen the report.

The Sunday Times reported that Mchunu would neither confirm nor deny the alleged plot or the existence of the intelligence report.

Zikalala today called on ANC members not to be hoodwinked by the so-called fabricated reports.

“It’s all a pack of lies,” he said.
