ANC expects 300 000 at ‘show of strength’ rallies

The ANC will host its biggest pre-election rally at the FNB Stadium and other venues throughout the country on Sunday in what is seen as a show of strength before Wednesday’s poll.

The rally, which will be addressed by President Jacob Zuma, is expected to draw 170 000 to the stadium and surrounds.

ANC elections head Malusi Gigaba said 300 000 are expected to attend the Siyanqoba (We are victorious) rallies in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Northern Cape, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.

He said almost 2 000 buses would ferry party supporters in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State and the North West to FNB Stadium and its overflow venues, while 28 trains and buses would transport them around Joburg.

In response to a question, ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe denied that party supporters would be vetted to prevent people from booing Zuma. The president has been booed twice over the last six months at the stadium.

“Booing is part if political life,” Mantashe said.

He said the rally would be a sign of whether or not the ANC’s campaign had yielded results, and was another opportunity for Zuma to address supporters.

“It’s a message we are sending to the country that we are going to the elections as an organisation that is well oiled,” he said.

Popular artists that will perform at the rally include DJ Bongz, Somizi Mhlongo, Chicco Twala, Uhuru and Solly Moholo.

Roads around the Joburg venues will be closed, and authorities are expected to direct motorists to alternative routes.
