ANC fears electoral list violence

2012-08-04 16:56

The ANC has admitted that its promise to call by-elections in areas where the “wrong” candidates made it onto the party’s local elections lists was a “big mistake”.

There are also fears in the party that calling by-elections could spark political violence.

National executive committee (NEC) member Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has almost completed her report on the lists and will submit it to a special NEC meeting at the end of the month.

Hundreds of angry ANC members from six provinces threatened to boycott last year’s municipal polls because they said branches’ preferred candidates were excluded from election lists.

The disputes over lists led to lawsuits and unrest in the Eastern Cape.

The details of the reports are still being kept under wraps, but City Press understands the ANC fears violence should it force disputed candidates to resign and to subject themselves to by-elections.

“How are you going to get those people out of those positions now?” an ANC source close to the process said.

“It will spark political violence again – that is the fear,” the source said.

List process spokesperson Mbulelo Musi confirmed the report was in the process of being finalised before being presented to the NEC.

A provincial leader from Limpopo, which experienced few list problems, said the ANC could not afford any by-elections.
