ANC launches ‘humble’ SMS campaign asking opposition leaders to vote for it

In a strange twist of events, the ANC in the Eastern Cape is trying to lure opposition party leaders into voting for the ANC in the upcoming May 7 general election.

The party has sent party leaders SMSes urging them to vote for the ANC because its development programmes and successes were tangible and undisputed.

Party leaders who the provincial ANC structure targeted include DA leader Helen Zille, Cope’s Mosiuoa Lekota, Agang SA’s Maphela Ramphele, FF+ leader Pieter Mulder, the EFF’s Julius Malema, UDM’s Bantu Holomisa and IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

Mlibo Qoboshiyane, the Eastern Cape ANC’s spokesperson and head of campaigns, said in a statement released this afternoon: “We have taken a decision to target individual opposition party leaders by sending them messages, encouraging them to vote for the ANC in the coming election.”

He said in the messages they shared “indisputable facts” about development programmes with the opposition party leaders which they wanted them to consider when voting.

“We do this because it is important in this election to share developmental information with all potential voters.

“This humble campaign is more tailor-made than spending millions on newspapers, TV and radio stations. With these messages, we are starting a direct engagement with these leaders as voters,” Qoboshiyane said.

He said the leaders, along with millions of South Africans, were beneficiaries of progressive development delivered by the ANC-led government and should therefore vote for the ruling party.

The message also reminded the opposition party leaders that the ANC had liberated them, so they should vote for it.

One of the messages seen by City Press reads in part: “We know you lead political parties. We ask you to vote ANC on May 7. Vote for progressive development in SA, vote ANC. Make your vote counts. Vote wise.”

Another message reads: “We are not asking you to quit your party. We are asking you to vote wise, vote ANC because we liberated you and set you free. Do it for progress. Vote ANC.”

Qoboshiyane said just as they were talking to millions of potential voters they were doing the same with opposition party leaders, “for them to take a decision that will benefit this country by voting for the ANC and not their parties”.
