ANC man in court after workshop turned violent

A Free State ANC member has appeared in the Thaba Nchu Magistrates Court, outside Bloemfontein, on a charge of attempted murder after a party political workshop turned violent and shots were fired.

Mzwandile Phupha (42) was released today on R1 000 bail and told to appear again on February 29.

Phupha was arrested yesterday after a workshop he attended on Saturday turned violent.

An ANC member, Sam Matiase, said a group of people stormed the Barolong community hall in Thaba Nchu, where some ANC members were attending a political workshop.

The workshop was organised by the MK Veterans Association in the province.

Matiase said the group – who announced themselves as ANC members – then started attacking people at the workshop.

“Several shots were fired and at least 10 people sustained serious injuries,” he said.

Nkahiseng Sefume sustained a wound to the head. She said she was hit several times with an iron bar.

Some of the people who attended the workshop were at court today. They insisted that “their attackers are (Premier Ace) Magashule supporters” and that they were attacked because of their “outspoken criticism” against Magashule, the ANC leader in the province.

City Press called the ANC’s regional chairperson, Paseka Nompondo; Magashule’s spokesperson, William Bulwane, and the party’s provincial secretary, Sibongile Besani, for comment on the matter.

None of them were available.
