ANC office arsonist sentenced

2011-06-16 08:00

A 43-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in prison yesterday for setting fire to the ANC’s Pietermaritzburg offices, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

“In what can only be described as swift justice, the man has been sentenced on the same day he was arrested,” police spokesperson Brigadier Phindile Radebe said.

Themba Dumisani Jethro Mbona pleaded guilty in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court.
Police expected to make more arrests.

On June 12 the office of ANC regional secretary, Super Zuma, in a building in Jabu Ndlovu Street, was set alight.

The cost of the damage was estimated at R750 000.

Some party members had claimed the crime was intended to destroy documents kept there.

An upper level of the same building was destroyed in a fire in November.
